There are a lot of problems with regards to flashing Mi5 due to Xiaomi persistently trying to secure the handset as of lately.
We have learned that EDL mode is no longer available to Mi5 when you are already using MIUI V7.3 and later versions.
There are many cases where buyers fall victim to resellers who sells Mi5 and other Xiaomi phones with a tampered unofficial ROM which you can not update anymore and forever stucked to one version only.
Now let me walk you thru how to flash / recover your bricked Mi5 when your already messed up, meaning, Bricked.
Step 1: Files needed to be downloaded:
Mi PC Version china Suite - bigota.d.miui.com/MiFlash/MiInst.exe
Rom OTA - http://en.miui.com/a-234.html
Step 2: Turn off your phone and boot into recovery mode by pressing Power + Volume Up button, the screen should look like this
Step 3: Connect the USB-C to your MI5. Take note it is better to use a USB 2.0 Port than a USB 3.0 Port for this purpose.
Step 4: Hold the SHIFT Button on your keyboard and click on 刷 机 found in the Mi PC Suite (it means FLASH)
Step 5: Select the OTA rom file and let it flash till 100%, normally it takes up to 30 to 45 minutes.
Step 6: Unplug and bootup your phone.
