Xiaomi Amazfit Stratos Smartwatch Full Review!

Amzazfit, the company behind the highly successful Mi Band and Mi Band 2 has released a smartwatch, not only for athletes, but also for business people (how can that be?). They have unveiled the Amazfit Stratos and the Amazfit Stratos+ and it can freely be paired with the Mi Fit App or the Amazfit App v2.0. The official name is still unclear that some called it the Amazfit Pace 2 and Amazfit Pace 2s, but based on the Mi Fit App its Stratos, so we will go with the official name on the Mi Fit App. I'm excited, lets get it started!

There are so many functions to do with the Amazfit App v2 to be honest with you, I like the change of watchface here, I hope in the near future we can upload our own watchface similar to those being done in the Huawei Smartwatch wherein I can choose Rolex, Tag Heuer, Omega watchfaces anytime I want using Premium watchface app.
Mi Fit App:
Im pretty more acustomed to Mi Fit App and it gives me the analysis pretty well. It can also be side by side with my Mi Scale V2, so I choose to pair it with Mi Fit App instead.
Now we placed the watch under endurance test and it went thru 2 grueling iron man triathlon race with our good friend and also a sports enthusiast, Mr. Brian Dee. Here is his input regarding the Amazfit Stratos pitted against Garmin 735XT.
Xiaomi Amazfit Stratos vs Garmin Forerunner 735XT

I. Battery Life
The Garmins have longer battery life over the Xiaomi Amazfit Sports 2 as the Garmin could last for almost a week. The Xiaomi Amazfit Stratos I tested lasted for only 4-5 days.
Using the GPS to track your workout would use up more battery. The Garmin and the Amazfit showed identical battery lives of around 50 percent after 4hrs of using it in the last Bike King Tri 1 2018. Suffice to say, the Amazfit is a capable device and its battery would hold up in runs, marathons, and half Ironman triathlons. If you are looking to do a Full Ironman (which would usually take 13 to 17hrs), the top of the line Garmins would be a better alternative.
Winner: Garmin 735XT
II. Charging Time:
The Amazfit Stratos fully charges in approximately 3 hours. Although that may be a decent charging time, the Garmins fully charges in just an hour. This will be a big plus for people who are always on the go.
Winner: Garmin 735XT
III. Body:
The Amazfit Stratos features a gorgeous carbon fiber body, while the Garmin 735xt’s body is only plastic. This makes the Amazfit Stratos a pleasure to wear and look at. The Carbon fiber body is a very unique and beautiful touch to the Amazfit Stratos and gives it a premium feel and look.
Winner: Amazfit Stratos
III. Weight:
The Amazfit Stratos is heavier at 59g compared to the plastic 40g Garmin 735xt. But even though the Amazfit Stratos is almost 50% heavier. However, personally I feel that the watch is balanced pretty well and feels just right to the hand and wrist. The difference in weight might be an issue to female users as they might want to have a lighter watch.
Winner: Garmin 735XT
IV. Size:
The Amazfit Stratos is slightly bigger and has a watch face diameter of approximately 46mm while the Garmin Forerunner 735xt has a diameter of 42mm. The bigger size might become a disadvantage especially for females as the Amazfit Stratos might look too big for their wrists.
Winner: Garmin 735XT
V. Screen Size
The Amazfit Stratos has a bigger screen than the Garmin Forerunner 735xt. Having a bigger screen is an advantage because it would be easier to read the data and screen of the Amazfit Stratos

VI. Touchscreen:
The Amazfit Stratos have touchscreen, while the Garmin 735xt only has buttons to navigate the watch and its functions. Having touchscreen might be a matter of choice or not for the athletes as using touchscreen takes a bit of getting used to. But despite this, having a touchscreen display sure is a very welcoming feature to have.
Winner: Amazfit Stratos
VII. Screen Quality
The Amazfit’s screen looks better and brighter than the Garmin 735XT. The Amazfit’s screen looks crisper and sharper and is very easy to read and look at in different lighting conditions- whether in bright sunlight or at night time. It also has auto brightness function which makes it easier for the user to read the watch, and at the same time save battery life.
Winner: Amazfit Stratos
VIII. Support for cycling accessories and sensors
The Garmins have extensive support for a wide array of cycling accessories and sensors, like powermeters, speed and cadence sensors, etc. The Amazfit Sports meanwhile don’t have support for those bike accessories. This might be a turnoff for some of the more serious athletes.
Winner: Garmin 735XT
IX. Heart rate monitor:
It is easier to know your heart rate using the Garmin 735XT than the Xiaomi Amazfit Stratos. One would be able to know his/her current heartrate with just one touch of a button.
Meanwhile the Amazfit would entail a more complicated process of looking for the heart rate measure menu, then after pressing the measure button, it would still need approximately a minute before knowing your heart rate.
Winner: Garmin 735XT
X. Data and gps accuracy:
Sadly, my Garmin’s and the Amazfit’s recorded gps data is not the same. The Amazfit has more mileage than the Garmin. I have been using Garmin for a long time already and I think its data is pretty much spot on. This inaccuracy might be a huge turnoff for some people, especially athletes who are data geeks and who need accurate data to analyze their training workouts.
Winner: Garmin 735XT
XI. Ease of Use:
In using both watches’ triathlon functions in an actual triathlon race, the Garmin is easier to use than the Amazfit 2. You just have to press a button to move to the next sport in the Garmin, while the Amazfit requires the user to press and hold the button for around 5 seconds. This method would sometimes be quite cumbersome for athletes to do on an actual race.
During the Bike King Tri 1 2018, Amazfit Stratos only recorded 0.56kms on what was supposed to be a 40km bike ride because it might not have held the button long enough to change sport.
I didnt encounter any problem at all with the Garmin because it changed sport seemlessly and was able to fully record the whole race. This type of errors might turn off some athletes, especially the more serious ones.
Winner: Garmin 735XT
XII. Price
This is the biggest advantage of the Amazfit over the Garmin. The Garmin cost 2x or more than the Amazfit.
Winner: Amazfit Stratos
XIII. Customer support, Warranty and After sales service
Garmin’s warranty and after sales service is really good. It would replace any watch that might have failed during its warranty period of 1yr. This is also one of the main reasons why Garmin is the leader in gps sports watches. People trust them fully and could abuse their watches with peace of mind.
Winner: Garmin 735XT
XIV. Bugs
Encountered one bug during my 2 weeks of use of the Amazfit Stratos. The watch stopped charging at 79%. It didnt charge fully even though I charged it for 8hrs already. Thankfully, it charged fully the next time I charged the Amazfit Stratos.
XV. Conclusion
The Amazfit Stratos is a really good GPS sports watch. It really looks good plus it has almost all the features that a sports bug would want in his/her GPS sports smart watch..in just a fraction of the cost of the well known GPS sports watches in the market like Garmin and Suunto. The price, the looks, and the features of the Amazfit Stratos would surely entice a lot of people who are doesn’t have the budget for the expensive Garmins and Suuntos. Xiaomi is indeed a revolutionary company.
Despite how good the Amazfit Stratos is, since the Amazfit Stratos has triathlon function and is probably targeted for triathletes, it might still not be enough to sway triathletes (especially the really serious ones) to exchange their Garmins for the Amazfit Stratos. But surely the Amazfit Stratos is headed in the right direction. I surely cant wait for the next offerings of the Amazfit. It might finally be the watch that would make us throw away our Garmins for Amazfits!
